I'm new to whisky drinking. What would be a good one to start with? So you're new to whisky. You probably don't want to start with anything too smoky or peaty, so avoid the Islay whiskies to begin with. If you have tried whisky at a friends that you liked, and can remember the name of the distillery you could type that into the Keyword search box. Or, if you want to try something similar, but different, have a look at our alternatives chart. Blends: Although some people can be a bit 'sniffy' about blended Scotch whisky, the incorporation of grain whisky into the blend can result in a very smooth drink, that is often very palatable to newbies. Go to Blended Scotch Whiskies. Lowland Malts: The older Lowland whiskies offer a certain smoothness and are easy on the palate. Go to the Lowlands and choose something over 8 years. (younger lowland whiskies can sometimes be a bit too spicy for a more delicate taste) Highland whiskies are great if you think you'd like something fairly smooth, with a little sweetness, bt good character. Go to the Highlands Irish Whiskey: is mostly triple distilled which gives it a smooth quality. It also often has a slightly sweeter taste. Go toIreland
